Welcome to Irongray Community Council

Our Community

Irongray is a small parish situated in the rural and picturesque landscape of Dumfries and Galloway. Rich in history with connection to the infamous Covenanting period, the area today is considerably more peaceful but still busy, with agriculture playing a significant role.  The main cluster of population is in the village of Shawhead where both primary school and village hall are situated.

Irongray Parish Church

Undoubtedly one of the most beautiful landmarks in our area, Irongray Parish Church was constructed originally on an ancient religious site in 1803, the tower was added in 1872.

Services are held  on the second and fourth Sundays of the month and all are welcome.

Shawhead Village Hall

Shawhead Village Hall was built as a library back in 1911 but later converted into a hall to host a variety of activities. Recently refurbished, it is a bright and welcoming venue for our sporting and social user groups and, is also available for hire. It is also where the Defibrillator is situated for emergency use.

The Routin Bridge

The Routin Bridge is another notable feature here, a beautiful old stone built bridge sitting above the tumble of rocks at a waterfall. Set amidst it’s deciduous woodland fringe, this waterfall is much photographed.
